Where Have All The Good Men Gone?

Everyday, break-up stories: Man leaves woman because of another girl, the hackneyed parting lines "It's not you, it's me", and then the rest is history. Everyday, a couple breaks up; if slightly fortunate, cools off; or if a little more fortunate, ends up being friends (?) That's why hypocrites call themselves "man haters" after being left off from a scathingly unforgettable relationship.

Is this world that we all live in is totally hopeless? Even if divorce is not legal in the Philippines, women ought not be complacent and ought to start worrying about, if I may quote Nina, "men's mysterious ways". I am not saying that men should all the time be the one to blame. Women have respective faults and shortcomings, too. It's just that I am a woman, myself, and I am seeking and hoping for a man who is not just good enough, but someone who can break the confined glass of negative cliches about them.

But it seems that, for a lot of people, it's so difficult to find for one. Where have all the good men gone?

I have an answer. They're all in asian telenovelas right now. So far, as what I've watched and know, I saw all of them there.

Let me elucidate my dreamy and ivory-towerish answer. Since most Filipinos are hooked into watching Asian telenovelas, I might as well start from there. Isn't it amazing how soap operas (especially the Korean soaps nowadays) can brainwash women by presenting to us ideal men from the ideal world? I'll pick 5 Korean series that I've watched so far, and try to figure out what I mean. I chose only 5 because the rest are not, uhm, physically good to be on my list. At least from my taste and point of view, they're not. And I chose the supporting roles because the main guys are, obviously, too good not to be liked. And the main guys are all taken in the story. So, if you are really a dreamer and wants to live in their world, one might as well make it a little more real by having single guys (what? a completely ambiguous paradox). Anyways, check them all out.

1. Full House's Yoo Min Hyuk

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Kim Sung Soo

He is a business honcho who delves into film marketing. And that's where he hires Han Ji Eun/ Jessie (Song Hye Kyo) and eventually falls in love with her. He will later on realize that even if Ji Eun and Young Jae's (Rain) marriage is a contract, Ji Eun loves Young Jae/ Justin. But still, he continued to support Ji Eun's dream to be a writer because he did not fire her or drop the whole proposal for a screenplay. He was all through the end, helpful to fixing Ji Eun and Young Jae's marital problems and even the loser-to be Young Jae's wavering fame.

2. Sang Doo, Let's Go To School's Min Suk

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Lee Dong Gun

He is a doctor. His girlfriend is Chae Eun Hwan (Gong Hyo Jin), Sang Doo's (Rain) childhood sweetheart and first love. When Eun Hwan and Sang Doo finally saw each other after a couple of years had passed, he gets dumped. But still, he was helpful not only to Eun Hwan but also to Sang Doo. He was the doctor who cures Sang Doo's child. Eventually, he knew that Cha Bori (child) is not really Sang Doo's, so he revealed it instead of keeping it into himself knowing that, that can be his ticket back to Eun Hwan's life.

3. Stairway to Heaven's Han Tae Hwa/Tristan

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Shin Hyeong Joon

Okay, he is not that good looking but the younger version is. He may be a reckless, hopeless and penniless painter, but he loves Han Jung Suh/ Jodi (Choi Ji Woo) with all his life, even if it means he will burn in hell. Imagine trying to make ways for Jung Suh and Song Ju/ Cholo (Kwon Sang Woo) to be reunited. Imagine, committing suicide and donating his own eyes for Jung Suh. Imagine accepting all the physical torment from the order of his own mother. Imagine threatening his own sister and defying his mother for the two lovebirds to live in peace.

4. Love Story in Harvard's Hong Jung Min

Lee Jung Jin

Okay, he is not a good guy. He does dirty work. He is a money-grabbing, power-loving, manipulative lawyer who met the only woman he loves in Harvard. That woman is Lee Soo In (played by Kim Tae Hee <the evil Han Yuri/Eunice in Stairway to Heaven>). But Soo In fell for the main guy, Kim Hyun Woo (Kim Rae Won). And because of this, it is like he lost to a thousand cases because he is driven to win and get what he wants in life, even if it is through the wrong path or way. Knowing Hyun Woo is far ahead to Soo In's heart, he still risked his own life just to be able to protect and save her because she is suffering from T-cell lymph node disease. By doing this, he is fully aware that he will only make Hyun Woo and Soo In's relationship deeper and stronger. And the fact that he is a major, total and irreparably ruthless scumbag. Whew! The power of love.

5. Endless Love "Autumn in my Heart's" Andrew

Won Bin

A rich guy falling for a poor girl. The guy hired her as his personal maid. They play golf and in the hole, the girl finds a ring. The guy confesses his love for her. Typical. It happens here in Philippine cinema and television. But this is different. The guy is Won Bin. Enough said.

I wish I can be like Sadako, who came out from a television. At least, I can literally and figuratively say, I came from the television set where all these great men are in. Hay! Let me live in a world where all I care is to hear a cheap maudlin background music while I ran after these men. :)

Born on the 14th of December 1983. Thought to be a child prodigy. Prefers cats to dogs. Non-coffee drinker. Loves to ride the space shuttle. Graduated without honors. Waits for the black hole sun to wash away the rain. Sings rock songs in videoke. Can read Korean characters. Has a strong affinity for isopropyl alcohol. Poetry and music addict. Can draw stick people. Lousy handwriting. Loves pink and black. Introvert. Introspective. Pizzapasta lover.

These are a few of my favorite things

Apple, oranges, yellow, pink, black, neon, nail polish, chucks, long skirts, pillows (chocolate snack), marshmallows, rainbow, portico, headbands, studs, gig shirts, umbrella, handkerchief, post-its, hairclips, white visor, piano, guitar, drums, printed socks, boy bawang, mernell’s cake, plastic bags, paper bags, anti-diarrhea, baby cologne, baby soap, powercard, full house, bi's pics, seok’s card, hula-hoops, Acete de manzanilla, scrabble, chess, pictures, neruda’s love poems, journals, pumpkins' albums, arirang tv, dictionary, receipts.

Three things that I am proud I can do

1. Read, think and type all at the same time.
2. Make those ketchups in fast food chains that they scantily give as an alternative for candy.
3. Sing under a pillow.

10 things I hate about me

1. I can never appreciate flowers. Butterfly phobic (or whatever the right term for this) = distance myself from anything that they love.
2. I am a certified garbage collector. I collect receipts, plastic bags, paper bags, Tower records and other record store’s wrappings for CD’s, memos, passed-notes (from school during a boring class), quizzes and other activities that involve papers from my favorite subjects, etc.
3. I can easily fall in love (tsk, tsk... )
4. I bite my handkerchiefs (so they usually appear worn and frayed).
5. I am an introvert (so what the hell am I doing this blog for? And why in the world does my profile appear on Friendster?) ... Nah, John Donne’s right, no man is an island (duh?!!)
6. I am a spendthrift when in comes to books and CD’s
7. I don’t care about new clothes and fashion. My mom jokingly tells me every time I would be in need of a new attire or piece of clothing for a certain event or occasion, I can tie up or sew together all my books and CD’s to have something to wear. Nyahaha!
8. I am a paradox of everything and that is why my life is always a clear confusion.
9. I do things that are not supposed to be done, miss people you’re not supposed to miss, read books that are not supposed to be read, love people you are not supposed to love but in the end...it doesn’t even matter
10. I am always a wannabe.
