The Massacre of Hip-Hop

50 Cent got a new album called “The Massacre”. Wait, wait, 50 Cent who? I thought the noun is just a simple currency designation. Oh, yeah! 50 Cent, the rapper who was discovered and popularized by the white-infamous rapper Eminem. It’s your birthday, we gon’ party like it’s your birthday. I thought he died with the onslaught of a gazillion hip-hop neophytes that I can’t even know who’s who and whose song is playing. But it’s good that he stayed. Not that I am happy about it. I’ll just utilize him for now to set an example about what I am going to write in this entry.

His new album is called “The Massacre” which features the new hit “Candy Shop”. Nothing new really. It’s hip-hop. But what I’d like to point out in here is the apt use of “The Massacre” for his album title. I have the benefit of associating it with the hip-hop world because if you still don’t know, hip-hop has been massacred.

I used to like hip-hop music. But I will not be a hypocrite that from here and there, I still can appreciate hip-hop music, may it be from a pioneer artist or 50 Cent. I admit, I like his “it’s your birthday” song. It’s infectious like a Britney spears ditty. But I just feel all the remorse and disappointment in hip-hop these days. Back in the days, hip-hop or rap music is the vehicle or medium of African Americans to steer their way to be heard in the so-called land of the free. Back then, the beats, the rhymes, the wails and the hollers were used to free themselves from slavery, social oppression and racial discrimination. Now, what do we get from the genre? All booties, bling-blings, pimp rides, mansions, Crystal. I don’t know if I am in the right position to say this but I think the likes of Puff Daddy (oops, P.Diddy) and Snoop Dogg were to be blamed. They are a disgrace in the hip-hop community. Why sing about sex, NY, fashion designers, cash, and all the worldly things when they can do parody or use paradox in singing such? What happened to the foundation built by great hip-hop free-thinkers like Public Enemy and Arrested Development?

Rap music sucks. I want to simply put it that way. Yes, it is true, hip-hop improved in a way because the music is easily accessible nowadays. Check out MTV and BET. But will we all be content with the colorful world of wealth and fame it propagates? Will we all just let ourselves be carried with the whole “gangster, feuds, immorality” outlook of the music? If we let that continue to happen, listening to hip-hop’s music will be suicide

I can’t stop piracy

I should not promote piracy but I can’t just let that make me feel all blue and yellow because I did not have that one song.

This is a not review. This entry is for the sake of telling to people that I just again thought of one of my favorite bands. They are the emo/screamo band, The Used, who writes agonizing music such as “Buried Myself Alive” and “Blue and Yellow” (which is my all-time favorite). Yesterday, I get to visit my school so I hastily grabbed the chance to drop by the University Mall for “music piracy” updates. I’ll digress here: I find it funny how music pirated shops sell these days. They now have the “underground thing” with the walkie-talkie system that it just made me remember how my grandmother narrated to us their experience of having underground homes during the Japanese colonial period. So enough of that, as I was saying, I get to buy this compilation of up-to-the-minute rock tracks that included one song from The Used. And to think, the song was not that “new” for I’ve been hearing it since late December of last year. But what can I do to make up for my frustration, after realizing that when “In Love and Death” (The Used’s follow-up album) was sold out in all record stores? Resort to piracy of course. Besides, the rate of a foreign artist CD is worth 450-550 so why not prefer to have something economical? Whatever the case may be, I would like to say that I finally have it. It’s just one song and it provided me with a thousand smiles, the lyrical content of it, notwithstanding.

All that I’ve Got

So deep that it didn’t even bleed and catch me

So deep that it didn’t even scream…

I’ll be just fine pretending I’m not

I’m far from lonely and it’s all that I’ve got

I guess I need not feel all gloomy and lonely even though it’s the only song from the new album that I’ve got. Haha!

i can't get no...satisfaction

the rolling stones had predicted it right. if it weren't for them, then britney spears would not have had the chance to use this one friggin' great rock track as her alibi for fame.

the human's endless desire...
i just had a class with my student about this. people who are not aware or knowledgeable enough of the english language know this meaning, what more with americans and pseudo-americanized people like us, filipinos?

my previous entry about troy mentioning mtv...
well, mtv is not much of a help when it comes to invigorating people's minds to function "well", but i just had to rush into the website to update myself of what's going on in the ivory tower of entertainment.

and this is what i got: britney spears is 3-months pregnant.
Wow! it's a unanimous victory on my part after envying her great body and all of that, now at least i get to level or surpass her in that part. haha! as if! but still i reveled with the fact that she is, indeed pregnant and there's no way for her to linger these days in the tube to dance while lip-synching.

but what's up with the article on mtv about britney spears promising to shut everybody out off her personal life? as if she can do that. i mean, that will make people meddle further in her life. as if she meant it! what's with the whole "a documentation of love" reality show looming around. oh no! newly weds sucks now what? mtv is so darn clever when it comes to these reality shows. steering and utilizing the influence of music towards the world of the imbecile.

what do we have on mtv these days? punk'd, dismissed, osbournes, newly weds, now that show of carmen elektra and dave navarro (why oh why dave? since when did you become a sellout?).
even on mtv philippines, what do we have? we have all these crappy vj hunt thing, and many more to come.

i remembered mtv video music awards in 2004 i think, when chris rock hosted the show. he mentioned that mtv is not about music and music videos anymore. it's all now about what's going on in the so-called real life of these so-called real people.

when troy found his genie in a bottle

when will this all end? when will this crap in music end? in short, kailan ba matitigil ang kahibangang ito? mahirap bang intindihin ang salitang "hindi pwede"? wala lang, bakit mahirap pumasok sa mga makikitid na utak ng tao ang kahalagahan ng musika? okay, fine, whatever. i know this is a free country and everybody can do whatever they want pero i need to be a utilitarian with this one.

napanood ko si troy montero sa mtv ngayon. he was singing the 100th version of "Special Memory" sa MTV. Oh, di ba sosyal. kung sa bagay, MTV these days di mo rin malaman kung ano na nga ba ang purpose. in fairness, mtv promotes indie music these days. thanks to the existence of marc abaya (may purpose pala ang pag-alis niya sa <s>)sa vj line-up at nagkaroon ng mga pro-pinoyrock segments and shows. sugarfree, imago, sago, juan pablo dream ang mga ilan sa na-feature na sa mtv lokal atbp. pero parang masyadong lumalayo na ang sinusulat ko.

yun nga, i saw the video of troy montero and it made me remember ara mina, sandara park, judy ann santos, rainier, sheree of hot babes and who knows who's next? long and dagul? hay! nakaka-frustrate talaga. music meant to sincerely uplift people's hearts. pero realizing all of these, music disheartens me nowadays. because of the video, i get to check out this err, interesting article about troy and his so-called dream.

FIL-AM hunk Troy Montero finally got his wish of becoming a recording artist.

ako rin naman ah, sino bang hindi pinangarap ang maging singer? yeah right. if it weren't for his great abs, his face and fame, di naman siya bibigyan ng record deal. it wasn't a wish troy, it was all about power and fame.

¡°It has always been my first priority since I came to the Philippines five years ago,¡± Troy says of his singing ambition. ¡°Back home [in the United States], I had this band with my friends and we were called Garage Band. All non-professionals. There is a small rock bar in our town where we were allowed to jam during weekends.

yeah right again. garage? did he just mentioned garage? what a shame for the garage community. why the sudden shift to pop? did he just relinquished his hopes to be a rockstar?

"I made a list and a committee was formed to vote for the ones that would be included in the album," he relates. "They're all my favorite songs but there were so many of them. My special request to include 'All My Life' was also granted. This is a very special song which I dedicate to Aubrey."

ang galing! he gets what he wished for! as if the whole album is his soundtrack. napaka-showbiz yung Aubrey part. Ano kaya song niya kay Nikki?

But there won't be any duets of Troy and Aubrey in the album, nor will there be wedding bells for the inseparable lovebirds. The possibility of recording a Filipino song is also unclear because Troy, after these many years in the Philippines, is still not well-versed in speaking the language. Troy claims he is willing to take a crash course in Filipino.

good gracious if they did have a duet! if ever that happens, troy is considered as the pinoy version of ricky martin in this article, so sino si aubrey? si christina aguilera? haha

yun lang. just another complaint for the day. i have nothing against pop music. as a matter of fact, i do enjoy listening to pop may it be a regine/ogie hit or the new song of barbara streisand. pero sana people will start to open up their ears and minds when it comes to the whole marketing thing in music. we should know the difference of music from crap.

dahil down ang server

Waits for the black hole sun to wash away the rain. Sings rock songs in videoke. Can read Korean characters. Has a strong affinity for isopropyl alcohol. Poetry and music addict. Can draw stick people. Lousy handwriting. Loves pink and black. Introvert. Introspective. Pizzapasta lover.

These are a few of my favorite things

10 things I hate about me

1. I can never appreciate flowers. Butterfly phobic (or whatever the right term for this) = distance myself from anything that they love.
2. I am a certified garbage collector. I collect receipts, plastic bags, paper bags, Tower records and other record store’s wrappings for CD’s, memos, passed-notes (from school during a boring class), quizzes and other activities that involve papers from my favorite subjects, etc.
3. I can easily fall in love (tsk, tsk... )
4. I bite my handkerchiefs (so they usually appear worn and frayed).
5. I am an introvert (so what the hell am I doing this blog for? And why in the world does my profile appear on Friendster?) ... Nah, John Donne’s right, no man is an island (duh?!!)
6. I am a spendthrift when in comes to books and CD’s
7. I don’t care about new clothes and fashion. My mom jokingly tells me every time I would be in need of a new attire or piece of clothing for a certain event or occasion, I can tie up or sew together all my books and CD’s to have something to wear. Nyahaha!
8. I am a paradox of everything and that is why my life is always a clear confusion.
9. I do things that are not supposed to be done, miss people you’re not supposed to miss, read books that are not supposed to be read, love people you are not supposed to love but in the end...it doesn’t even matter
10. I am always a wannabe.
